The Business Configuration Model: Eight Domains Every Roadmap Must Cover
Every success condition in a strategic roadmap gets run through eight business domains before anything is sequenced: Proposition Development, Process & Technology, Resources & Capabilities, Partners & Suppliers, Commercial Effectiveness, Value Communication, Customer Insights, and Relationship & Retention. If a domain has zero actions once this check is complete, either something has been missed or the ambition was scoped too narrowly to touch that part of the business, either way, it needs an explicit answer, not a silent gap.
The eight domains and what each one checks
| Domain | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Proposition Development | Is what you sell still the right thing to sell |
| Process & Technology | Can operations and systems actually deliver the ambition |
| Resources & Capabilities | Does the organisation have the people and skills required |
| Partners & Suppliers | Do external relationships support or constrain the plan |
| Commercial Effectiveness | Can sales and pricing actually capture the intended value |
| Value Communication | Does the market understand and believe the proposition |
| Customer Insights | Is the ambition grounded in real customer evidence |
| Relationship & Retention | Will customers stay once acquired |
Why eight domains and not a simpler checklist
A shorter list is easier to use but misses exactly the kind of blind spot this exercise exists to catch, most roadmaps that fail do so because they never touched a domain like Partners & Suppliers or Relationship & Retention, not because the domains they did address were poorly planned.
How to use the model without turning it into busywork
The point isn't to force actions into every domain regardless of relevance, a domain with zero actions can be a deliberate, documented choice. The point is making that choice explicit and checked, rather than an unnoticed gap discovered mid-execution.
Where this fits in the Strategizer method
The eight-domain check happens after ambitions are translated into blockers and success conditions, and before anything is sequenced into a roadmap, it is the step that forces the "what's missing here" conversation while it is still cheap to have.
More Than 65% of Strategic Initiatives Miss Their Goals. Not Because the Strategy Was Wrong.
The Strategizer turns ambition into a validated roadmap with owners, deadlines, dependencies, and real capacity, the translation step most consulting firms skip entirely.
